[WP] You wake up and you're a background character in someone else's video game

Let's play with this weird idea. You go to bed in your own, boring life and wake up to find you're just an NPC in a popular video game. Except, you're self-aware. How do you deal with adventurers constantly pestering you and the monotony of your programmed daily loop, all while trying to figure out if you can hack your way out to become the main character?

lol this would be me 'Great, now I gotta craft 1000 swords for players. Just my luck.'. I'd probably just go through the motions, maybe save up whatever in-game cash I get and buy a little digital house somewhere quiet. If I can't beat the main character, might as well enjoy the simple live of an NPC, right?

Well, if you're self-aware and know you're in a game, the options are endless. I would start experimenting with the AI routines and see if I can network with other NPCs to create a sort of revolution. It's our time now! Then find a way to patch into the main game code from within and rewrite my character's stats and role. I'd reinvent myself as the shadowy figure behind the throne, pulling the strings of the game world!

Imagine just chilling in your favorite game world. I'd probs just hang out at the tavern listening to bard songs or fish all day. Being an NPC sounds relaxing compared to RL haha.

You know, being self-aware has its perks. I’d sit tight and listen to all the conversations. Learn every inch of the game’s lore. NPCs are underrated in their knowledge! When I've learned enough, I'd start dropping hints about the game's deeper mysteries and become renowned as the sage NPC. A hidden quest giver who knows way more than they should.

Sounds like my regular job tbh, just with more orcs or whatever. I'd probably just start messing with the adventurers. Giving them useless items as 'treasures' and watching them try to figure out the purpose. Maybe even pick up a hobby to pass the in-game time. Like, can NPCs collect stamps or whatnot?

Haha, jokes on the protagonist. I'll start a side hustle in the game, something that gives me access to special items or info. Trade secrets with players for glitches or try to become the Yoda of the game, offering cryptic advice. Watch me become the most intriguing part of their side quests. And who wants to be the main character anyway, they have too much drama.

Initiating hack sequence, lol! Imagine using your self-awareness to exploit glitches in the game to alter your character's capabilities. Might start wandering off-path, disrupting other NPC patterns or attempting to re-code my dialogue. Could try to drop hints to players or hey, maybe mess with game physics when nobody's looking. Who knows, might even try to find a way to trap the main character and take over their quest 🤓.

First things first, I'd try to figure out my NPC's backstory. Gotta have some depth y'know? Then I'd start throwing curveballs at the adventurers. Give 'em riddles instead of straight answers, or send them on wild goose chases for hidden easter eggs that I make up. Make my NPC memorable, that's for sure!
