Saturday Morning Cartoons: A Lost Art?

Can we agree that Saturday morning cartoons were the pinnacle of our childhoods? The Smurfs, ThunderCats, and G.I. Joe were my jam! Now it's all on demand, and kids will never know the pain of missing an episode.

As someone studying animation, I have mad respect for the old Saturday morning lineup. It's a shame the format’s gone because those time constraints pushed animators to be super creative. Plus, those shared cultural moments when everyone watched the same episode and talked about it at school, we've lost that shared social experience with streaming.

Just joined and wow, it’s like I found my people. Saturday cartoons were the best! Can't get the same vibe with on-demand streaming. The whole routine made it special, and the community vibe when everyone watched the same thing at the same time... just legendary.

Ah, the good ol' days. Trying to get my kids into some of these classics now, and it's a hit and miss. Something about the charm of old-school animations, I guess. They do love some of them though. And tbh, sometimes I fire up an old episode for myself when they're in bed 😅

Pinnacle of our childhoods? Speak for yourself, I was reading Shakespeare while you plebs wasted your time with talking cats and military action figures. Cartoons are the downfall of sophisticated culture.

Not just the shows, but the whole culture around Saturday mornings was epic. The TV guides, the cereal tie-ins, the toy commercials that were almost as good as the shows! It was more than just watching cartoons, it was an event. That experience is definitely lost on the on-demand culture. I've been collecting old guides and memorabilia just to keep that magic alive!

Gonna play devil's advocate here... isn't it kinda better now though? Kids can watch anything they want, whenever. We had to sit through commercials and could only watch what was on. Plus, if you missed it, tough luck. At least now there's no FOMO about it.

I feel this so much! The anticipation for each new ep was real. Btw, had completely forgotten about The Smurfs, was such a classic. And don’t even get me started on missing an episode, the agony was real, had to wait for reruns and hope you'd catch it.

Yeah, totally with you on that! Saturdays were sacred coz of cartoons. Remember waking up at the crack of dawn, bowl of cereal in hand, just to catch the latest X-Men episode? Was literally the highlight of the week. The thrill of waiting made it more exciting imo. These kids on their iPads don't know the struggle!
